Jesus The Bread of Life

The more I study the miracles of the Old Testament, the more I see that they were prototypes of Jesus in the New Testament. One such miracle was the provision of bread (manna) for the children of Israel in the wilderness.

The manna came each morning, Exodus 16:12…At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”

Every morning God showered bread from heaven, and  for us, His mercies are showered upon us every morning (Lamentations 3:23).

Jesus takes the miracle of bread in Exodus a step further by saying that He Himself, is bread from Heaven.

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 48 I am that bread of life. 49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Jesus equates Himself with the manna from heaven. Therefore, let us let us see the uniqueness of manna and how we are to react to it.

1. Manna was a manifestation of the Glory of the Lord – Exodus 16:7. The Glory of the Lord rest upon the Lord Jesus. Luke 4:18

2. They were to eat as much manna as they could eat. Jesus is an all you can eat buffet. Exodus 16:16. Concerning Jesus, we are to taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalms 34:8

3. They mishandled the manna and worms entered the manna. We are not to mishandle Jesus. John 6:71-72 (Judas hanged himself)

4. When the sun grew hot it melted. Jesus went to hell for us. He ultimately took the keys to hell.
Acts 2:31

5. There was no manna on the Sabbath. They were supposed to gather twice as much on the sixth day. Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath. Hebrews chapters 3 & 4.

6. They ate the manna until they entered the promise land. We feast on Jesus in this life. When we leave this life, we will forever be with Jesus in our promised land. Revelation chapters 21 & 22.

7. As generous as the Lord was to Israel with the manna, Israel wanted the meat of Egypt:

Numbers 11:4 – 4 And the mixt multitude thatwas among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? 5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: 6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

Friend, don’t murmur against the blessings of God, and despise the continual mercies of Jesus. That entire generation died and did not make it into the promised land.

See how this is personified in Jesus:

Hebrews 6:2:4 – For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing theycrucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Conclusion, let’s partake of the Jesus who is the Bread from heaven with joy.

New Testament Theology

New Testament theology is what God has revealed about Himself in the New Testament. The system of New Testament theology takes the various truths that the New Testament books teach us about God and presents them in an organized fashion. The New Testament discloses the coming of the predicted Messiah in the Old Testament (Isaiah 9), the birth of the New Testament Church (the body of Christ), the Church age, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the rejection of the Messiah by Israel, and the doctrinal beliefs applied to the believer in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

The phrase “New Covenant (Testament)” was spoken by Christ at the Last Supper, and is claimed by Paul as the substance of the ministry to which he was called. He preached the Good News, the Gospel of Jesus Christ for salvation. New Testament doctrines were primarily for believers to be instructed and learn how to live lives that would be pleasing to Father God. The Old Testament deals with the record of the calling and history of the Jewish nation, and as such it is the Old Covenant. The New Testament deals with the history and application of the redemption provided by the Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross, and, as the New Covenant, it supersedes the Old.

The application of theology to the New Testament is the same as that of the Old Testament. It is the study of the progressive revelation that God gave through the New Testament writers. The study of the major doctrines of the Bible makes up a systematic theology for the believer, following the progressive revelations that God made to man from the beginning to the end of the prophetic book of Revelation. Again, theology is the gathering of facts concerning God and His Son Jesus Christ and the work of God the Holy Spirit in all the historical, present, and future events spoken of in the Bible.

Apologetic Theology

The English word “apology” comes from a Greek word which basically means “to give a defense.” Christian apologetics, then, is the science of giving a defense of the Christian faith. There are many skeptics who doubt the existence of God and/or attack belief in the God of the Bible. There are many critics who attack the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible. There are many false teachers who promote false doctrines and deny the key truths of the Christian faith. The mission of Christian apologetics is to combat these movements and instead promote the Christian God and Christian truth.

Probably the key verse for Christian apologetics is 1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” There is no excuse for a Christian to be completely unable to defend his or her faith. Every Christian should be able to give a reasonable presentation of his or her faith in Christ. No, not every Christian needs to be an expert in apologetics. Every Christian, though, should know what he believes, why he believes it, how to share it with others, and how to defend it against lies and attacks.

A second aspect of Christian apologetics that is often ignored is the second half of 1 Peter 3:15, “but do this with gentleness and respect…” Defending the Christian faith with apologetics should never involve being rude, angry, or disrespectful. While practicing Christian apologetics, we should strive to be strong in our defense and at the same time Christ-like in our presentation. If we win a debate but turn a person even further away from Christ by our attitude, we have lost the true purpose of Christian apologetics.

There are two primary methods of Christian apologetics. The first, commonly known as classical apologetics, involves sharing proofs and evidences that the Christian message is true. The second, commonly known as “presuppositional” apologetics, involves confronting the presuppositions (preconceived ideas, assumptions) behind anti-Christian positions. Proponents of the two methods of Christian apologetics often debate each other as to which method is most effective. It would seem to be far more productive to be using both methods, depending on the person and situation.

Christian apologetics is simply presenting a reasonable defense of the Christian faith and truth to those who disagree. Christian apologetics is a necessary aspect of the Christian life. We are all commanded to be ready and equipped to proclaim the gospel and defend our faith (Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Peter 3:15). That is the essence of Christian apologetics.
