Father Son Relationships in The Church

Can a pastor have another pastor as a covering?

The answer is subjective. Honestly, there is not a lot in the Bible that discusses the job description of a pastor or bishop. I believe the terms are synonymous in the New Testament.

We can glean from the father son relationship between Paul and Timothy.. Let’s look at three passages:

1st Corinthians 4:15 – For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

1st Timothy 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

2nd Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus. 2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God theFather and Christ Jesus our Lord.

When you read Paul’s epistles to Timothy, you can feel Paul’s nurturing heart. Let’s look at:

1st Timothy 1:18 – This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

Paul’s nurturing heart can really be felt in:

2nd Timothy 1:3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; 4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; 5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. 6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; 9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Paul admonishes Timothy to nature others just as he nurtured Timothy:

2nd Timothy 2:1 – Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

The above referenced Scriptures were indeed succession planning.

Sure, there are unhealthy mentor/mentor relationships in the Church. Mentors acting as lords over mentees. Shun the relationships.

Younger pastors need a good and healthy mentor/mentee relationship.

The Prophet Daniel And The Apostle John

Theological Moment

There are two men in the Bible beloved by God. They are the Prophet Daniel (Old Testament) and the Apostle John (New Testament).

Daniel 10:19 – And he said, “O man greatly loved, fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage.” And as he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”

John 20:2 – So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

What is special to note is that these two men were given special apocalyptic (revelation) into the first and second comings of Christ. We can’t understand the book of Daniel or the book of Revelation clearly without one another. The book Daniel explains the book Revelation and the book Revelation explains the book Daniel. Bible prophecy can be understood through the unified writings of these two men.

Application: Those who are greatly loved by God will have unity and understanding of one another. Daniel and John lived nearly 500 years apart, but they had unity. You may have people you genuinely love and they genuinely love you who you may have fellowship with or spoken to in a while, but the love and unity in Christ is still there.

There is special revelation, unity, and love in those who are beloved in God.

The Jezebel Spirit

Theological Moment: The Spirit of Jezebel

This short essay will explicate (explain) and elucidate  (make) clear the spirit of Jezebel by simply exegeting the Scriptures. Hundreds of preaching points have been left for you to glean; however, I have given 15. Please adapt this essay for Sunday messages or Bible study. If inspired to do so, please write a book.

Let’s expose the spirit of Jezebel.

1st Kings 16:30 – And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him. 31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

Ahab was the the seventh king of Israel and he reigned from 874-853 BC. Seven in the Bible denotes completion. It could be argued that with Ahab’s reign that a completion was to be made in Israel; however, instead of a completion Israel married the Jezebel spirit.

Ahab married Jezebel who was not an Israelite. She was a Phonecian and a Cannanite. As a Cannanite she was cursed (Genesis 9:25). The land of Canaan was to belong to Israel (Genesis 11:31). First four things to know about the Jezebel spirit:

1. The spirit comes to stop your completion.
2. The spirit wants to marry you.
3. The spirit brings a curse into your life.
4. The marriage to the spirit will stop you from processing the land promised to you by God.

Let’s look at the definition of Jezebel:

Original: איזבל
Transliteration: ‘ı̂yzebel
Phonetic: ee-zeh’-bel
BDB Definition: Jezebel = ” Baal exalts” or ” Baal is husband to” or ” unchaste”

Jezebel means Baal exalts or Baal is husband to. We are to exalt God (Psalms 37:34, 99:45, 118: 28). We are not to let Jezebel be exalted (Psalms 140:8,  Isaiah 14:13).

Let’s learn two more points about the Jezebel spirit

5. The Jezebel spirit comes to exalt itself. What does it exalted itself against? The name of Jesus.

6. Jezebel can never be married to anyone, because Jezebel is married to Baal. She may whore around, but she is married to Baal (Revelation 19:2).

I like to use this analogy; Baal is a pimp and Jezebel, his wife, is his top whore. Let’s explore the whore’s pimp Baal:

Original: בּעל
Transliteration: ba‛al
Phonetic: bah’-al
BDB Definition: Baal = ” lord”

The Supreme male divinity of the Phoenicians or Canaanites (noun proper masculine).

Baal is Lord of the Canaanites. Baal the true husband of Jezebel is a false God. Ahab had married the wife of a false God. When Ahab who was the king of Israel married Jezebel, he in essence married Israel to Baal.

God told Israel not to have any relationship with Baal (Deutoronomy 6:14-15) And Israel’s flirtation with Baal goes back to Judges (Judges 2:13). But, Ahab married the nation to Baal.

Let’s look at Jezebel’s assignment and learn point six:

1st Kings 18:4 For it was so, when Jezebelcut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.
(Also, 1st Kings 18:13)

6. The Jezebel spirit tries to cutoff (kill) the Word of God and the true prophets of God. Jezebel knows that if she can stop you from hearing the voice of God, she has you.

But, look further into the text, Obadiah hid 150 prophets in three groups of 50. The Jezebel spirit is still trying to cutoff the Word of God, but there are still hidden prophets.

God raised up a prophet named Elijah to deal with the Jezebel spirit. Elijah means:

Original: אליּהוּ אליּה
Transliteration: ‘êlı̂yâh ‘êlı̂yâhû
Phonetic: ay-lee-yaw’
BDB Definition: Elijah or Eliah = ” my God is Jehovah” or ” Yah(u) is God”

Ist Kings 19:1 – And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

The spirit that God gave Elijah will kill the prophets of Jezebel exist today (Matthew 18:18). Point seven:

7. God will raise someone up to deal with Jezebel and kill Jezebel’s prophets:

Neither Jezebel nor her husband Baal will sit idly by and not issue threats.

1st Kings 19:2 – 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

Jezebel’s threats were empty, and what she issued about Elijah came back on her.

1st Kings 21:23 – And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. Point Nine:

9. The dogs with eat any Jezebel that manifest itself.

God raised up a man named Jehu to kill Jezebel. Jezebel got wind of Jehu’s coming, so she pointed her face to make herself attractive. But Jehu sent eunuchs (castrated men) to kill her for him.

2nd Kings 19:30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window. 31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master?
32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. 33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.
34 And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for sheis a king’s daughter. 35 And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands. 36 Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel: 37 And the carcase of Jezebelshall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

Jehu had Jezebel killed, but the Jezebel spirit is alive and in the church today. Let’s look at Revelation chapter two:

Revelation 2:18 – And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; 19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

The modern spirit of Jezebel can be analyzed by augmenting five points to the aforementioned:

10. She calls herself a prophetess. The Jezebel spirit claims to have a word but doesn’t. The Jezebel spirit seeks a title to hide behind.

11. She teaches, but at the end of her teaching is seduction. Her teachings leads one to her and not Christ.

12. She is the supporter and enabler for fornication (sexual immorality). The Jezebel spirit is not fornication, but the Jezebel spirit compromises with fornication. It says it’s Ok.

13. She wants you to eat food sacrificed to idols.
The Jezebel wants you to be complicit with idols. Note: anything can become an idol.

14. The Jezebel spirit is very seductive. Many will have the Jezebel spirit and not even know it.

15. The church sufferest (allows) the spirit of Jezebel to exist. Call the spirit out. The spirit can’t can’t exist if we the Church don’t compromise.

It should be noted that Jezebel is a spirit. A spirit can manifest as a man or woman. The Jezebel spirit manifested itself as a woman to Ahab, because that is what Ahab liked and what Ahab needed. Although he needed a wife, he didnt need Jezebel.

The Jezebel spirit will manifest in any manner to get you to sin and pull you away from the Word of God.

Revelation 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

This is a theological exposition, but it is also a prophetic word. God is giving a time to repent. If repentance is not made from compromise, sexual immorality, and idolatry then tribulation is about to come and even death.

Listen to the voice of God and repent from and expose the spirit of Jezebel.
