Excerpt of teaching from Genesis chapter one. This excerpt and exercise is ONLY for the serious student of theology. Critical thinking is imperative.
The Godhead (the unified existence of God) demonstrated in the beginning of time (as it relates to man and the habitat that God made for man) that He was Lord. And the concepts and principiums (principles) that He put in place were for the weal (welfare) of man. He demonstrated that these principiums were inviolate (never to be interrupted).
One principium that God placed into effect that He Himself would exemplify through the life of Jesus was the concept of light ruling over day and night. Let us exegete Genesis 1:14-19.
Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
Notice the following points:
1. There is a distinction between day, night, and the lights. Many times we don’t make the distinction, when we see the light that rules the day (sun) we call it day. But really the sunlight is not day, it exists to rule over day. The same is true for the moon and night.
2. It is imperative that you see the differences between the lights and what the lights rule BEFORE point three.
3. I told you earlier that God would personify and exemplify this principium. He would do so through Jesus. Let us go to the Scriptures:
John 8:12 – Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Now, according to the principium, the light RULES over the day and night. The lights (sun and moon) are distinguished from the concepts of day and night. Jesus is the true light that rules over the daytimes and nighttimes of our lives.
Assignment: Exegete and comment on the following verses with the knowledge of the above principium. This exercise requires critical thinking. Please write at least on paragraph for each verse.
Psalms 30:5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. 6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
Luke 8:16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
Revelation 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Note: Revelation 22:5 should be answered in light of your eschatalogical view.
